Fiesta San Antonio began in 1891 when a group of women decorated horse-drawn carriages and paraded in front of the Alamo, throwing flower blossoms at each other as they did.
This early parade was organized to honor the heroes from the battles of the Alamo and San Jacinto. Originally known as the "Battle of Flowers Parade," it has evolved over the years to become a vibrant celebration that lasts many days.
In 1959, the Fiesta San Antonio Commission took over responsibility for making the festival happen, and has grown it beyond what could have ever been imagined back in 1891.
